A practical winter packing list for Iceland — what earns its space in the bag, and what first-timers over-pack for no reason.

Iceland Winter Packing List: What You Actually Need

Winter in Iceland is less about extreme cold and more about wind, wet, and changeable weather — pack for that combination rather than for a generic "cold country" trip.

The layering system that actually works

  • Base layer — merino wool or synthetic, not cotton, since cotton stays wet once damp.
  • Mid layer — a fleece or light down layer for insulation you can add or remove.
  • Outer shell — genuinely windproof and waterproof, not just water-resistant. This is the single most important item.
  • Waterproof, insulated boots with real grip — icy pavements are a bigger everyday hazard than the cold itself.

Small things that make a bigger difference than expected

  • Hand and foot warmers, for anyone doing an outdoor tour like a glacier walk or Northern Lights hunt.
  • A headlamp — useful for early, dark mornings and any evening walk away from streetlights.
  • Sunglasses — low winter sun and snow glare are surprisingly strong on clear days.
  • Traction devices (microspikes) if you plan to walk much outside organised tours; pavements ice over often.

What people over-pack

A heavy parka rated for arctic expeditions is usually overkill for city and day-tour travel — the layering system above, with a good shell, covers nearly everything. Most tour operators also provide specialised gear (crampons, extra layers) for activities like glacier hikes, so check what’s included before buying your own.

Dress for wind and wet, layer for temperature, and check what your tours actually provide before over-buying gear.
