Yes. Entry is by timed slot and walk-ups are not accepted, so the lagoon is booked ahead — often well ahead in summer and over the winter holidays. Pick your slot around your flights rather than the other way round, and check the lagoon’s current operating status when you book: the Reykjanes peninsula has seen volcanic activity in recent years, and closures there are occasionally announced at short notice.

The Blue Lagoon is the large, famous one in a lava field near Keflavík Airport, which makes it a natural first or last stop. Sky Lagoon is on the edge of Reykjavík with an ocean horizon and a multi-step ritual, so it’s the easy choice if you’re staying in the city without a car. The Secret Lagoon at Flúðir is smaller, older and much plainer, and sits on the Golden Circle route — the one to pick if you want a soak that feels local rather than designed.

That’s the most efficient way to do it, and it’s a well-established option — the lagoon is close to Keflavík Airport and far from Reykjavík, so slotting it into an arrival or departure day saves a whole round trip. Luggage storage is available on site. Leave a comfortable margin before your flight rather than the bare minimum.

Showering thoroughly without a swimsuit before entering is the local rule at every pool and spa in Iceland, and it’s not optional. Tie long hair up and use plenty of the conditioner provided — the silica in the water leaves hair stiff for days otherwise. Leave silver jewellery in the locker, as the water tarnishes it.

Arguably it’s better. Sitting in hot water with cold air on your face is the whole appeal, and the contrast is sharpest in winter — with the bonus that on a clear evening you’re soaking under dark skies with a chance of the aurora overhead.
