Beginner-Friendly Hiking Trails in Iceland

You don’t need serious hiking experience to enjoy some of Iceland’s best trails — a number of the most rewarding walks in the country are short, well-marked, and open to anyone reasonably fit.

Reykjadalur hot spring valley

A moderate hike of a few hours from a trailhead near Hveragerði leads to a valley where a geothermal river is warm enough to bathe in — one of the more popular "earn your soak" hikes near Reykjavík.

Svartifoss, in Skaftafell

A short, well-maintained trail leads to Svartifoss, a waterfall framed by dark basalt columns, within Skaftafell nature reserve — an easy add-on for anyone already stopping along the South Coast.

Coastal paths at Arnarstapi–Hellnar

On the Snæfellsnes peninsula, a flat coastal path connects the villages of Arnarstapi and Hellnar along dramatic sea cliffs, arches and bird colonies — one of the easiest walks in the country for the scenery it delivers.

A few ground rules

  • Stick to marked trails — Iceland’s ground cover (especially moss) is fragile and slow to recover from off-trail damage.
  • Check the weather immediately before setting out, not the night before.
  • Waterproof, sturdy footwear matters more here than trail distance.
