Iceland with Kids: A Family Travel Guide

Iceland is a better family destination than its reputation for extreme landscapes suggests — short driving distances near Reykjavík, genuinely safe public spaces, and sights that fascinate kids as much as adults.

What works well with children

  • Geothermal pools and lagoons — kids generally love them, and most have shallower areas.
  • The Golden Circle — geysers erupting on a schedule are genuinely exciting for children, and the loop is short enough not to overtire them.
  • Whale watching — an easy, engaging boat trip that doesn’t demand much of younger travellers.
  • Horseback riding — Icelandic horses are calm and well-suited to nervous or first-time young riders.

What to be more careful with

Ice caves, glacier hikes and highland F-roads are generally not suited to young children — check the minimum age and fitness requirements on any specific tour before booking. Coastal spots like Reynisfjara need extra vigilance with kids near the waterline, given the area’s known sneaker-wave risk.

Pace it for kids, not for a map

Build in more slack than an adult itinerary would need — shorter driving days, and don’t chain two big sights back to back. A Golden Circle day followed by a relaxed pool afternoon is a far better family rhythm than two packed sightseeing days in a row.
