Jökulsárlón is a glacial lagoon where enormous chunks of ice calve off Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and drift slowly out toward the sea — one of the most-photographed sights in Iceland, and one that genuinely lives up to the pictures.

What makes it special

The icebergs range from small, clear fragments to house-sized blocks streaked with volcanic ash, floating past seals that often haul out onto the ice. The lagoon has grown significantly over recent decades as the glacier retreats, and it keeps changing shape year to year.

Diamond Beach, right across the road

Chunks of ice that drift out of the lagoon wash back up on the black sand beach directly opposite, where they sit like scattered glass sculptures — hence "Diamond Beach". It’s a two-minute walk from the lagoon car park and shouldn’t be skipped.

Boat tours on the lagoon

Amphibious boat and Zodiac tours run out onto the lagoon itself in the warmer months, getting you up close to the icebergs and seals — check current seasonal availability before you go, since the lagoon partially freezes in the depths of winter.

How to get there

Jökulsárlón sits roughly 5–6 hours’ drive from Reykjavík along the South Coast route, making it a realistic stop on a multi-day trip rather than a casual day out. For route, timing, parking and the car you need, use the Jökulsárlón self-drive guide. Most multi-day Ring Road tours build in an overnight near Vík or further east specifically to reach it comfortably.
