What the midnight sun actually looks like in Iceland, when it happens, and how to make the most of the extra daylight.
Around the June solstice, Iceland experiences the "midnight sun" — nights so bright it barely feels like the sun sets at all, especially the further north you go.
When it happens
The effect is strongest right around the summer solstice in late June, with several weeks either side still offering very long, bright evenings. In the far north of the country, the sun can stay above the horizon entirely for a stretch of days; in Reykjavík, it dips low without fully disappearing into darkness.
What to actually do with the extra light
- Photography — the low, golden light around midnight is often better than midday sun.
- Late hikes — trails that would need a headlamp in other countries are fully lit at 11pm.
- Flexible sightseeing — you’re not racing a sunset, so plans can shift later without losing the light.
It takes some adjusting to
Bright nights genuinely disrupt sleep for a lot of visitors. Pack a proper eye mask or ask your accommodation for blackout curtains — most Icelandic hotels are used to the question.
