Snæfellsnes gets called "Iceland in miniature" for a reason: in one peninsula, about two hours from Reykjavík, you get a glacier-topped volcano, black sand beaches, lava fields, fishing villages and dramatic coastline — a condensed version of the landscapes spread across the whole Ring Road.

The glacier at the centre of it all

Snæfellsjökull, the glacier-capped volcano that gives the national park its name, is visible from much of the peninsula on a clear day — and from Reykjavík itself, across the bay, on the clearest ones. It’s also the volcano Jules Verne chose as the entrance to the underworld in *Journey to the Centre of the Earth*.

What to see along the way

  • Kirkjufell — the distinctively shaped mountain that’s one of Iceland’s most photographed spots, especially with its neighbouring waterfall in frame.
  • Djúpalónssandur — a black pebble beach scattered with rusting shipwreck remains.
  • Arnarstapi and Hellnar — small villages linked by a dramatic coastal walking path over sea cliffs and arches.
  • Búðakirkja — a striking solitary black church on the peninsula’s south side.

How to fit it into your trip

Snæfellsnes works as a long day trip from Reykjavík, or as an overnight if you want Kirkjufell and the glacier tip without rushing. For route order, timing, parking and what car you need, use the Snæfellsnes self-drive guide. It also sits just off the Ring Road as a first or last west-side leg of a multi-day trip.

If your trip is too short for the whole Ring Road, Snæfellsnes is the closest thing to a condensed version of it.
