Þingvellir is the first and best-known stop on the Golden Circle, and it earns its place for reasons that go well beyond scenery — this is a place where geology and history line up exactly.

Where two continents pull apart

Þingvellir sits directly on the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, which are slowly drifting apart. The result is a visible rift valley you can walk straight through — one of very few places on Earth where this is easy to see and stand inside.

Where Iceland’s parliament began

Þingvellir is also where the Althing, Iceland’s parliament, was founded in 930 AD — making it one of the oldest continuous parliamentary institutions in the world. That combination of geological and historical significance is why it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Silfra: diving between continents

Within the park, the Silfra fissure fills with glacial meltwater filtered through lava rock so thoroughly that visibility can exceed 100 metres. Snorkelling or diving Silfra means swimming in the fissure between the two tectonic plates — a genuinely unusual thing to do on a day trip.

Visiting as part of the Golden Circle

Most visitors see Þingvellir as the first stop on a Golden Circle day trip, spending roughly an hour on the main walking trails before continuing to Geysir and Gullfoss.
