Vík and Reynisfjara: Iceland’s Black Sand Coast

Vík í Mýrdal is Iceland’s southernmost village and the natural stopping point for the black sand coast that makes the South Coast route famous — dramatic, but a place that genuinely demands caution.

Reynisfjara’s black volcanic sand, hexagonal basalt columns, and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising offshore make it one of Iceland’s most photographed beaches — and one of its most dangerous. Sneaker waves here have caused real, well-documented incidents, and they aren’t predictable from the shoreline.

Never turn your back on the ocean at Reynisfjara, and always stay well back from the waterline — the warning signs exist because people have been swept in.

• Dyrhólaey — a rock arch and headland near Vík with a lighthouse and coastal views, and puffins in nesting season.
• Vík village itself — small, with a distinctive black church on a hill above the coastline.

Getting there

Vík sits a little under two hours’ drive from Reykjavík along good, paved road, making it a realistic day trip destination or a natural overnight stop on a longer Ring Road route.
