3 Days in Iceland: A Complete First-Timer’s Itinerary

Three days is a genuinely good amount of time for a first look at Iceland — not enough for the whole Ring Road, but plenty for the sights closest to Reykjavík that draw most first-time visitors in the first place. Here’s a day-by-day plan that keeps driving times sane and leaves room to linger.

Day 1: Arrive and settle into Reykjavík

Most flights land at Keflavík in the morning after an overnight from North America, or midday from Europe. Get to your accommodation, then use the afternoon lightly: a walk around the old harbour, Hallgrímskirkja for the view over the city, and an early dinner. Jet lag is real — don’t schedule anything that needs you sharp on day one.

Day 2: The Golden Circle

This is the day most people picture when they think of Iceland. The Golden Circle loop — Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss waterfall — takes a full day at a comfortable pace and starts and ends in Reykjavík, so there’s no need to change hotels.

Day 3: The South Coast

Head east along the South Coast for waterfalls you can walk behind (Seljalandsfoss) and thunder past (Skogafoss), then on to the black sand beach at Reynisfjara. How far you go depends on your flight home — a day trip from Reykjavík comfortably reaches Reynisfjara and back if you leave early.

In three days, pick two big days and keep the arrival day light. Trying to cram three full itineraries into three days is the fastest way to spend your whole trip tired.

Tour or self-drive on a 3-day trip?

With only three days, a guided tour usually makes more sense than renting a car — you don’t lose time to navigation or winter road conditions, and both the Golden Circle and South Coast are widely run as day tours from Reykjavík. If you do rent, keep the days you’re describing above as your rough route; both loops are well-marked and easy to follow.

If your flight allows a few extra hours, a stop at a geothermal lagoon on the way back to Keflavík is the classic way to close out a short trip — several sit close to the airport road specifically for this reason.
